    NEWS
THE GRAND PARKWAY IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETION
Segment E is 15.2 miles in length
Landtech Consultants, Inc. is currently providing civil engineering services for the design of Segment E subsection 1.1 of State Highway 99, better known as the Grand Parkway. The Grand Parkway is a proposed 180+ mile highway through seven different counties and encircling the Greater Houston region. This highway will be the third outer loop serving the regional mobility needs of the metropolitan Houston area. The Grand Parkway is being funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, METRO, and the Counties of Harris, Fort Bend, Chambers, Galveston, and Brazoria.

Segment E is 15.2 miles in length and will be a four-lane, controlled access toll road with intermittent frontage roads from IH 10 to US 290 through Harris County. The alignment for Segment E was selected to minimize environmental impacts while responding to public and landowner’s needs. In March 2009, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved executing agreements with engineering firms to begin the design of Segment E of the Grand Parkway.

Subsection 1.1 of Segment E includes 0.22 miles north of IH 10 to 0.13 miles south of Mason Creek and the pavement tie-ins for Direct Connectors “A” and “C” to IH 10. Landtech is producing the roadway preliminary and final plans, specifications, and estimates in accordance with the Program Management Plan and the Harris County Toll Road Authority guidelines.

We are developing plan and profile sheets for the SH 99 mainlanes and direct connectors to IH 10. Our plans will be developed to avoid or minimize conflicts with the existing and proposed utilities. The project includes Drainage design, a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan, Typical Section design, Roadway Plan design, Retaining Wall design, and a Traffic Control Plan with consideration for traffic on IH 10.

Segment E is projected to open for driver use in 2011 with the entire Grand Parkway opening in 2015.

LONE STAR COLLEGE SYSTEM EXPANDS THEIR CAMPUSES IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Landtech is responsible for the campus surveying services
Landtech Consultants, Inc. assisted the Lone Star College System (LSCS) by providing professional surveying services for the expansion to their Montgomery campus and the construction of the new Conroe Center. The LSCS is among Texas’s largest and fastest growing community college systems. The school was started in 1995, when residents in the Aldine, Humble and Spring Independent School Districts elected to create a junior college district.

The Montgomery Campus opened in 1995 and is a 365,000 square foot comprehensive college located on 133 acres between The Woodlands and Conroe. This campus is growing at an alarming rate compared to LSCS’s other campuses enrolling more than 14,000 students in the fall of 2008.

Currently, the Campus is undergoing one of the most significant expansions in the history of LSCS. The recent passage of a bond referendum for LSCS included construction of three new buildings on the main campus, as well as a new 83,000 square-foot northside center in the Conroe/Willis area. The college is adding a new 75,000 square-foot academic classroom building; a 60,000 square-foot health science center; a 20,000 square-foot arts instructional building; and a 1,200- space parking garage. The Montgomery Campus will also house a satellite facility for Sam Houston State University providing localized access to a four-year degree program to complete the college experience. In the Fall Semester of 2008, approximately 3,494 students who originated from LSCS transferred into Sam Houston State University.

Topographic map in AutoCAD of the Conroe Center

Landtech is responsible for the surveying services at both campus locations. At the Montgomery Campus, we developed a composite boundary map of the entire campus to establish the perimeter boundary. In addition, we prepared a topographic survey for the construction of three new buildings and a parking garage. The new Conroe Center is to be built at FM 3083 near the fair grounds in Conroe on land donated from the Conroe Industrial Development Corporation. We prepared the boundary survey for the property conveyance as well as a topographic survey of the site and adjoining FM 3083 and Conroe Park Drive North for the design and construction of the new facility.

The expansion of the Montgomery Campus and the Conroe Center are expected to be completed within the next two years. Both Campuses will allow access for education and career training opportunities for students in the area.

GULF COAST REGIONAL BLOOD CENTER - REBUILT AND GREENER
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is seeking LEED-NC 2.2 silver certification
Landtech Consultants, Inc. recently assisted the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center with the construction of the new Mobile Operations Complex located at 9990 Fannin Road in Houston, Texas. The new 85,000-square-foot facility replaced the previous warehouse that was lost in a fire in 2005. However, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center did not just want to rebuild, but wanted to have a positive impact on the environment.

The facility is located on an old oil field and incorporated elements of “green” design including a white reflective roof, dual flush toilets, eco-friendly paint, and use of recycle bins throughout. They are currently seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification which meets the criteria of the US Green Building Council for building performance and sustainability under LEED-NC Version 2.2.

Landtech prepared a topographic survey of the nine acre development and complete civil engineering plans which included grading, paving, drainage, water distribution, and wastewater collection. We also developed plans and details for detention, storm water pollution prevention, and storm water quality.

Launching point for more than 5,000 mobile blood drives a year

Landtech’s role was instrumental not only with the civil design but also through our vital Construction Administration services. Site visits were conducted during construction to visually inspect the implementation of equipment, and to verify that the earth work, utilities and pavement were constructed in accordance with construction documents. It was imperative that our engineers ensured all construction materials were compliant with the new civil design specifications and that all materials were installed properly to comply with LEED-NC 2.2 and sustainability requirements.

The location is the launching point for more than 5,000 mobile blood drives held each year as well as an office space to more than 200 employees. The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is on tract to receive LEED-NC 2.2 silver certification in 2010.

Landtech Consultants, Inc. has assisted the General Services Commission, City of Houston, Houston Independent School District, and private developers by incorporating LEED design elements into our civil design plans. We have completed the site plans for eight projects that have received or are currently awaiting approval for LEED certification.
